Fort Worth is sometimes known as the city of cowboys and cultures or the place where the West begins, but that’s only part of the story. If you’re just learning about this city, you’ll find that Fort Worth is more diverse than you might imagine. And its Tarrant County neighbor to the east, Arlington, is one of the 10 most diverse municipalities in the United States, according to a new study.
The WalletHub study takes into account a wide range of factors, not just ethnicity, in placing Arlington in the top 10. But what about Fort Worth? Keep reading to see where it ranks among the 501 largest cities in America.
Diversity In More Ways Than One
Actually, two North Texas cities are on the WalletHub list. Dallas is the 4th most diverse in the United States while Arlington comes in at number 8. The number 1 most diverse city in the country is Houston.
Researchers took data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Association of Religion Data Archives for the 501 biggest cities in the United States and looked at 5 types of diversity:
- Cultural, including race, ethnicity and languages spoken
- Socioeconomic, including income and education levels
- Economic, including occupations and industries
- Household, including marital status and household size, and
Diversity can power economic growth, add to cultural amenities and provide people of all walks of life more options in work, entertainment and more, the study points out. The downside of diversity, in some cases, is a higher cost of living and greater inequality between groups, but that doesn’t always happen.
As for the city of cowboys and culture, Fort Worth ranks a respectable 25 on the list of the most diverse cities in the United States. Austin ranks at 38, San Antonio at 66, Plano at 55 and Corpus Christi at 79.
